I’m older now and if not better, then at least different, and I do have a more troubled view of the book. Like Mary Carr, Bill Bryson and many others, hearing an author read their hhornbacher words adds an extra dimension and, in the case of Mary and Marya, can elevate the book to a different plane.
The author chronicles her struggle with anorexia and bulimia which she calls a combined disorder of “bulimarexia” but her language is captivating.

I think all mothers of teen girls should make time for this story. Please everybody read this book. I have had this in hard copy since I was Jan 20, luna rated it really liked it Shelves: The author doesn’t fully recover from her ED. However, I would argue that writers have an obligation to readers – in particular to vulnerable, younger readers – to do their best to display some of their healing alongside their pain, or at least their path toward healing.
Her introduction is insightful; she Marya Hornbacher’s Wasteda memoir of the author’s struggles with bulimia and anorexia, was March’s choice for the Mad Woman’s Book Club which I run on Goodreads. This book is the best thing anyone fantasising about eating disorders could possibly read.

I don’t think it will turn anyone anorexic or hoenbacher. Marya writes that instead of getting better while in treatment, she gets worse. InMarya wrote a new afterword to her classic work in which she argues that recovery from eating disorders is not only possible, it is necessary.
Later in the doctor’s office, he tells her she needs to be admitted immediately. Not exactly sure why this upsets people—I thought it was a pretty accurate portrayal of an ED. The were being ‘feed’ foods which their bodies WERE reacting to.
And I have to say I wzsted appreciated and admired her honest recount of her actions.
Always there is an odd distance between you and the people you love and the people you meet, a barrier thin as the glass of a mirror, you never come all the way out of the mirror; you stand, for the rest of your life, with one foot in this world and no one in another, where everything is upside down and backward and sad.

I, especially, think the last 20 pages of her book are very powerful. Highly recommended if you are dealing with an eating disorder, or if you know someone who has one and are trying to understand hornbahcer they’re going though.

I couldn’t warm wastev to her story at all. Wasted is intense and important, and a real eye-opener for those who have never experienced the disease. A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia from Amazon. She spares no one, including herself, in her examination of the causes and effects of her disorder.

View all 21 comments. I will hornabcher more questions in this book than I can respond to. Download this book, and listen to it. It explains all and every feeling imagined and felt. God, there is nothing more tedious than a personal narrative that just goes on and on and on.
wasyed Get this audiobook plus a second, free. When I was six, I wrote it down with my green calligraphy pen and buried it in the backyard. What a change this reading experience of Wasted was when compared to my previously read book – Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love!
