While beautifully written, with a charming little village that reminds me of a village I once visited in Switzerland, this story was not for me. Not bad, but different and still good. I’m going to rate this story a 3. He seems to idolize Britain in a way familiar from Australian colonial authors. Irving’s historical works include a five volume biography of George Washington after whom he was named as well as biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad, and several histories of 15th-century Spain dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra.

It is presumed that Crane has been spirited away in the night, after his borrowed horse sans saddle and hat are found abandoned in the morning. I also enjoyed John Bull and Stratford Upon Avon, off the top of my head, but there were some others that I would reread or recommend to a friend out of the volume.
